over 8 years of public and collegiate instruction.
Department of American Studies at UNC-Chapel Hill (August 2013-August 2015) As a Teaching Assistant in my first year, I helped professors with lesson planning, student support, and grading. In my second year, I taught about 35 students in weekly recitations, which in addition to grading and one on one student meetings required lesson planning and lecturing. Additionally, I gave multiple lectures on podcasting and stand-up comedy during my time in the American Studies department.
Duke University Libraries (August 2015-December 2016; February 2017) Working with two faculty members, we designed the curriculum, developed projects, and mold the syllabus for this brand new course entitled “NC Jukebox.“ This course was part of an initiative to give students hands-on experience with archival materials working with the field recordings of Folklorist and Duke English Professor Frank Clyde Brown. Throughout the semester, I lectured on various aspects and genres of southern music and supported students on their final projects.
Piedmont Farm Animal Refuge (May 2016-September 2018) As part of my position, I gave guided tours of the Refuge, which included instructing on the lives of the residents, factory farming, and plant-based diets. During the summers, I directed outreach efforts at various local outdoor festivals to engage the public in our organization to gain a broader local audience.
School of Information and Library Science at UNC-Chapel Hill- “Information Professional in the Makerspace” Course (Fall 2019) This course gave us students multiple opportunities for instruction and community outreach. During a student showcase for our Bibliocircuitry projects, I was able to engage the public on the different technologies I used- Augmented Reality, Laser cutting, and 3D scanning and printing. Working in a team for my final project, tasked with creating quick start guides for Watercolor Bot and AxisDraw, as well as, a one-time workshop for the NC State Libraries’ Makerspace.
NC State University Libraries, Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) (September 2018-present) As a department, SCRC uses various outreach tools to bring our collections out to our university and public community. During our annual open house, we invited friends of the libraries into the special collections to talk about our work. In my position, I also created digital content for our department, including copy for blogs and social media accounts. These posts raise awareness about newly processed collections or additions, discuss the behind-the-scenes work within the archives, and highlight researchers and students in our department. Working with Colin Keenan, in the Learning Spaces & Services department, we created a Virtual Reality exhibit entitled, “Modern Raleigh: An Architectural Exhibit.“ The gallery contained audio-visual and 3-D modeling elements to depict how the College of Design has influenced the landscape of Raleigh, NC.
